If you are moving back and want your home ready when you land, start the interior design about six months before your return date. Start later, and the last weeks before your flight fill up with unfinished work. Many families start earlier for a villa or a home that needs civil work.
Most of that time is not construction. It goes on design approvals, society permissions and material decisions. These take longer when you are in a different time zone.
This checklist works backwards from the day you arrive. It tells you what to finish in each window so the last few weeks are about cleaning and unpacking, not chasing a carpenter.
It covers interior design for NRI homeowners in Bangalore whose apartment or villa is either:
If you would like a studio to run the whole process for you, our interior design services in Bangalore page explains how we work with homeowners from brief to handover.
| Before your return | Focus | Key outcome |
|---|---|---|
| 6+ months | Decide what the home needs | Home inspected, scope decided, tenants’ exit planned |
| 4–5 months | Appoint a designer, approve the design remotely | 3D designs and itemised BOQ signed off |
| 3 months | Permissions, contract and execution start | Society approval in hand, work begins |
| 1–2 months | Utilities, appliances and shipping | Connections in your name, appliances ordered, shipment planned |
| 2–4 weeks | Snag list, cleaning and handover | Home handed over, defects fixed, deep-cleaned |
| First week back | Move-in checks | Everything tested, warranty file in hand |
These windows assume a typical apartment. Our apartment projects usually take about 8 weeks from concept to completion. Villas take 12 weeks or more depending on scale and civil scope. If your home needs walls moved, bathrooms redone or flooring replaced, move every step one or two months earlier.
Our apartment interior design checklist walks through the defect inspection room by room.
Write down three lists:
This simple split is what lets a designer give you a realistic timeline.
This is the stage that slips most often for NRIs, because every decision waits for a call across time zones.
Studios with good references are often booked a few weeks ahead, so do not leave this to the last month. Our guide to the 4BHK interior design timeline shows how each phase adds up for larger homes.
Most Bangalore apartment complexes and gated communities need some combination of:
Find out the process, and decide who will submit the forms and hold the spare key while you are away.
Before you pay the design sign-off milestone, make sure the agreement covers:
Our interior design contract checklist lists every clause to check.
For interior work alone, an authorisation letter to the association and a clear contract are usually enough. You will generally only need a Power of Attorney if someone has to sign legal or registration documents for you. If you do, start early: a POA signed abroad needs attestation and stamping, which takes time.
Most return-to-India guides miss this part, and it decides whether your first week back is comfortable.
| Usually worth shipping | Usually better to buy in Bangalore |
|---|---|
| Artwork, books, personal items | Large appliances (Indian voltage, local warranty and service) |
| Good-quality loose furniture you love, if it fits the new room plans | Mattresses (sized to Indian bed frames) |
| Kitchenware and tableware | Curtains and blinds (measured on site) |
| Small items with sentimental value | Lights and fans (local fittings and spares) |
India uses 230V power and different plug types from the US and some other countries, so check any electrical item before you ship it. Before you book a container, send your designer the dimensions of any furniture you are shipping. They can then plan the room around it, instead of finding out on arrival that the sofa blocks the balcony door.
If you can, ask for a short check visit about a week before you land. A stuck drawer or a dead switch is much easier to fix before you have unpacked. Our guide on moving in while interiors are still ongoing helps if your timeline slips and you need to live in part of the home while work finishes.
Once you are home, spend an hour on these:

Start about six months before your return date for a typical apartment, and earlier for a villa or a home that needs civil work. Most of the time goes on design approvals and permissions, which take longer across time zones.
Yes, if decisions are made on time and the studio can run the project remotely. Agree a response time for approvals, and plan a snag-list walkthrough and deep clean in the last two to four weeks.
Not necessarily. Briefing, design approvals and progress reviews can be done by video. A family member or the studio can handle keys, society forms and the final walkthrough if this is agreed in writing.
Name one person, usually a family member or the studio’s site supervisor, and tell your society in writing. That person opens the home for work, receives deliveries and hands the keys back at handover. Keep a list of every key, access card and remote that changes hands.
Ship pieces you love and that fit the new room plans. Buy large appliances, mattresses, curtains and lights locally, for voltage, sizing, warranty and service reasons. Share the sizes of shipped furniture with your designer before the layout is final.
It is often possible to move in with some rooms still in progress. Plan the order of work so the kitchen, one bathroom and the bedrooms are finished first. Your society’s work-timing rules will also affect how this works.
Test every tap, drawer, shutter, switch and appliance. Look for leaks under sinks. Keep a home file with material codes, appliance invoices, before-closing photos and the warranty terms.
